

Dr. Thomas G. Abell was the first surgeon to perform LASIK eye
surgery in Lexington, KY in the 1990’s and continues
to be a leader in the field of refractive surgery. AbellEyes
Laser Center has the latest diagnostic technology available
and has more than one Excimer laser on site.
A pioneer in refractive surgery, Dr. Thomas G. Abell is a board certified ophthalmologist
who has performed thousands of refractive procedures since 1981. He is an active
member of the American Board Of Ophthalmology, a member of the American Society
of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, and certified by the American College
of Eye Surgeons.
Dr. Abell graduated from the University of Kentucky, and the University of
Kentucky College of Medicine. Following an internship at Jewish Hospital (Cincinnati),
he served as chief resident in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University
Kentucky Medical Center.
In the mid-1980s, Dr. Abell became one of the leading innovators in lens implant
surgery and refractive surgery. From that period to the present, Dr. Abell
helped train ophthalmologists in the U.S. and abroad in advancing techniques
of intraocular lens implants surgery and refractive surgery. As a result
of his accomplishments, he was one of the core investigators in the Food
and Drug Administration American Laser In-situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) study
(CRS/USA). Dr. Abell also served as a clinical core investigator for the
Allegretto Wave Laser, which received FDA approval for a nearsightedness
and farsightedness in 2003.
Dr. Abell has conducted numerous courses and presentations on refractive surgery
(ALK, PRK, RK, LASIK, et al). He has been a frequent speaker at the American
Society of Refractive and Cataract Surgery, International Society of Refractive
Surgeons, and many ophthalmologic associations in the U.S. and throughout the
world. In addition, he has authored many published and peer-reviewed articles
about refractive surgical techniques.
Aside from all of Dr. Abell’s dedication to the field of ophthalmology,
he also supports many charitable organizations throughout the region.

Dr. Michael K. Smith is a graduate of the Southern College of
Optometry. He is a licensed optometrist for the management and
treatment of eye disease in
Kentucky. Dr. Smith actively participates in all aspects of patient care through
our patient’s
entire vision treatment experience.
He takes an active role in maintaining and constantly enhancing patient care
before, during, and after their Laser, Refractive or Cataract procedure. This
allows AbellEyes Laser Vision Center to continue the excellent care our patients
continually receive.
Dr. Smith was recruited by AbellEyes Laser Vision Center and the Eye Institute
of Central Kentucky. He arrived here after a successful career as a solo practitioner
in Northern Kentucky. Dr. Smith’s professional experience in the refractive
industry helps to round out our team. He practices in our Lexington and Campbellsville
offices.


Angela Marie Todd, OD, a native of Indiana has joined the professional staff
of the Eye Institute of Central Kentucky as a staff optometrist. After graduating
with a degree in Biology and Psychology from Indiana University, Dr. Todd earned
her optometry degree (OD) from the Indiana University School of Optometry.
Dr. Todd is the recipient of many awards including the American Foundation
of Vision for community involvement and promotion of vision awareness. Dr.
Todd is very civic minded and is active with her local Lion’s Club, Junior
Olympics, and the American Diabetes Association.
 
In practice since 1973, Dr. Lannie Busey, has joined the professional staff of
the Eye Institute of Central Kentucky as a staff optometrist. After graduating
from Eastern Kentucky University, Dr. Busey earned his optometry degree (OD)
from the Southern College of Optometry. Dr. Busey’s practice history
is comprehensive including a focus on helping patient’s manage their
eye health. Dr. Busey and his wife are an active couple, if you see him out
walking in the neighborhood, be sure to wave. Dr. Busey welcomes new patients
and invites you to stop by the office and introduce yourself.
